Project 1: Fabrication of Nano-Scaffolds for NeuroEngineering

Understanding the relationship between neurons and their extracellular environment will help understand the role of external cues in the development and function of neural networks in the brain. We have recently shown that nanoscale physical cues can guide the formation and function of neural networks (Gautam et al., Nano Lett. 2017). The current project will build upon these studies and contribute to the development of novel scaffolds for neural tissue engineering.

Project 2: Study of brain organoids to understand dementia

In this project, we will develop novel strategies for diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) using brain organoids. We will develop and use state-of-the-art measurement and stimulation techniques to evaluate the function of brain organoids and better understand the disease. Artificial-intelligence-based techniques will be used along the project to supplement the experiments. This project will be carried out in collaboration with experts in relevant areas.

The PhD candidate under this project will have the unique opportunity to solve a challenging high-impact problem while collaborating with researchers across Australia and learning hand-on skills in a wide range of fields simultaneously neuroscience, medicine, stem cells, physics and engineering opening doors to various job prospects upon completion of their degree
